New Foundation Initiative, 鈥楳an Cave Health,鈥 Aims to Spread Awareness About Early Detection & Combat Prostate Cancer
Chairman of urology at 秘密研究所 Winthrop Hospital, Aaron E. Katz, MD, will serve as prescribing physician for free prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screenings at the Milana Family Foundation鈥檚 annual golf fundraiser to be held June 10 at Fresh Meadow Country Club in Lake Success. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in men in the U.S., and about one man in nine will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime.
鈥淭he most important weapon we have against prostate cancer is early detection. With early detection, prostate cancer can be a very treatable disease,鈥 said Dr. Katz. 鈥淏y collaborating with the Milana Family Foundation, we are raising the visibility of this issue in our communities, and that鈥檚 key to saving lives and eradicating prostate cancer.鈥 Dr. Katz, who is a pioneer in the field of men鈥檚 health, having developed cryosurgery to treat and cure prostate cancers, recommends every man get a baseline PSA screening starting at age 40.
The Milana Family Foundation鈥檚 popular annual golf event is open to individuals as well as foursomes and also includes a putting contest, charity poker tournament, raffles and prizes, and dinner. The PSA screenings will be conducted by BioReference Laboratories and will take place at the club venue. Testing is free to all golfers participating in the foundation鈥檚 event.聽
The Melville-based Milana Family Foundation launched its newest initiative, Man Cave Health, in 2018. Driven by the notion that 鈥渕en take better care of their cars than they do their bodies,鈥 its purpose is to raise funds to promote awareness for men鈥檚 health issues such as prostate cancer. This initiative began after Thomas Milana Jr. had been diagnosed with prostate cancer, and in navigating his way from diagnosis back to wellness, increasingly saw the need for more awareness about men鈥檚 health issues, and so Man Cave Health was born. It is a destination for men seeking information about and support for prostate cancer.
